Only five riders met at Oliver's in Sherborne, Charlie, Steve Way, Paul, Tony and myself, maybe due to the lousy forecast and oppressive rainclouds. After a quick coffee we headed south up the A352 (always a displeasure) then took the A3030 to Alweston and made our way to Stalbridge where Charlie realised he could have had an extra couple of hours in bed. We carried on along some quiet and very flat lanes through Margaret Marsh and Guy's Marsh towards Shaftesbury, where Singlespeed Steve took over navigation and led us on a fairly extensive detour to avoid the hill into Shaftesbury en route to Motcombe - wimp!! The road through Motcombe had been resurfaced to Charlie's delight - maybe the locals had been paying their 'road tax'? - and it was a straightforward ride to Mere and then the Hillbrush Cafe, half an hour early, the original lunch stop of the Fox and Hounds at East Knoyle being fully booked. Dave M., Lorraine, Robin and Paula had made their own way to the cafe and were well into their lunches by the time we arrived, and left soon after. Lunch of paninis, ciabattas and breakfast rolls finished, a photo op against a display of brushes followed as we did not have the customary fashion shoot at the start, then everyone headed home. I carried on alone to Stourhead, aiming for Alfred's Tower but then the rain started and I headed home a shorter route via Bourton, Templecombe, Sherborne and Yetminster. Still 77 miles and good training for Majorca next week.
