Saturday 15 July 2017
Saturday was an overcast day with light rain expected at some point on our ride.
As usual Ben did an excellent job of scouting our route, always managing to stop at the appropriate change of direction.
Some of our route was dogged by weekend traffic rushing to the coast or Yeovil. Checking out the route last Thursday I saw much less traffic. Fortunately we had enough quiet lanes for some of us to wonder into the scenery, and do a bit of scent marking. Must have been to much coffee or tea at our cafe in Castle Cary.
Fine rain did appear as we passed through Muchelney on our way to Kelways garden centre, and keeping our average speed below 12mph we arrived at 12:45pm. A prearranged guest in the form of Norman Hodghton on his smart Bates fixed, joined us for lunch.
Not until some of our team tried to pay for lunch did we find that Mike A, the birthday boy had paid for all our lunches! What a generous gesture of friendship. Many, many thanks from everyone on Saturdays ride.
From our lunch stop Norman, Nicky & Peter left the ride for home home while headed for a few hills on our way through Somerton, Charlton Adam, Keinton Mandeville. We passed over the busy A37 at Lydford-on-Fosse before turning right to Foddington. With lots of power in his battery Ron sped off for home. At a more gentle pace we also turned left to North Barrow cross road. At this point, Lorraine, Richard, and me passed down through North Barrow, while remaining four turned for Haynes cafe.
Thanks to all who joined my ride.
